What each country needs
Italy
Qualified
Wales
Wales will just need a point from their clash against Italy to guarantee a top-two spot in Group A. The way Italy is playing though, a draw is a big ask, but even if Wales lose there’s still a good chance they’ll maintain second position.
Their goal difference is five better than Switzerland and they’re three points clear, so as long as Switzerland lose, draw, or win by a small margin against Turkey, Wales is safe.
And of course, if they somehow did fall into third-place, with four points there’s a good chance they’ll be one of the four ‘lucky losers’ that qualifies for the round-of-16 from third.
Expect to see Wales in the knockout stage.
Switzerland
Second-place in Group A is in reach for Switzerland, but a lot needs to go their way. Firstly, they need Wales to lose against Italy, and lose big. They would also need to beat Turkey comfortably, as they’ll be overturning a five-goal goal difference deficit to jump into second-place.
As long as Switzerland beat Turkey, four points will put them in a good position to be a ‘lucky loser’ and qualify from third.
A draw or loss against Turkey and it will more than likely spell the end of Switzerland’s tournament.
Turkey
Sitting on zero points with a goal difference of -5, Turkey face an uphill battle to qualify for the round-of-16.
If they lose or draw against Switzerland, it won’t be enough to claim third-place, so they have to win.
Three points would give Turkey an outside chance of qualifying as a ‘lucky loser’, and they would need a big win to improve their goal difference as much as possible.
